Taylor Swift – 1989 : A track by track Review

It is a big deal in music industry when an artist decides to change his/her musical style or explore more genres than his/her roots. And the usual outcome of it is the lukewarm reviews of the fan-base & critics. But that’s not the case when you’re talking about the Country music star Taylor Swift.

So, Taylor Swift released her 5th studio album “1989” yesterday and that is all everyone is talking about. Since 1989 marks her official transition from “Country” to “Pop”, there was a bit of a speculation how it might turn out to be. And from what the reviews look like I can say, it is a huge success.

1989DLX

1989 is the Birth-year of the artist hence the name. It contains many electronic sounds & heavy usage of deeper bass-lines & drum machines that gives it a Pop & a little bit of Hip-Hop feel to it. Most songs are written by Taylor Swift & Max Martin. Ryan Tedder & Shellback also receive credits.

I got the iTunes Deluxe Edition (or D.L.X.) of 1989 yesterday & I spent well over an hour or so listening to the whole album & boy, was it worth the while. While I was listening to it, So many ideas & thoughts came into my mind & I wanted to write something about those thoughts.

ts1989

Hence I decided to do a track by track review of the album. I’m not a huge music critic but I do like to think that I know more about music than most. So here goes…

1. Welcome to New York

The first track of the album is a very upbeat & danceable song. The melody is catchy & instruments are cleverly played. The lyrics intelligently guide you to the new sound that Swift has in stores for us. This song seems to be one of the best songs of the album & is most likely to get a Music Video. 5/5 for this one.

2. Blank Space

It’s the kind of a song that can be rapped. The drum beats are somewhat similar to a rap song & lyrics rhyme too. So if it was sung fast it might sound like a different Rap/Hip-Hop song. But, what Taylor does by taking it real slow is to make you move with the beat & you would be singing along without even knowing. 4/5

3. Style

This song is all about style. In terms of music, this is a type of a song you’d expect from an electronic band like CHVRCHES. But Taylor Swift’s vocals do justice to the drum-beat. And…. The lyrics describe how the “boyfriend” looks so, it does have a certain quality from Taylor’s past music writings. 5/5

4. Out of the Woods

Rhythmic, well-written, well-composed & last but not least rather catchy. This was the second single of the album that was available as an iTunes pre-order. The chorus of the song isn’t what I had expected after the beginning. Beautiful. This is another one whose music video I’d like to watch. 5/5

5. All You Had To Do Was Stay

The lyrics to this one might sound a little familiar to “Stay Stay Stay” from the 2012 album “RED” but the meaning of the song is completely different. This song is a complete Pop package that includes a fast chorus and good production & it is the shortest song from the album. Since I couldn’t give it 4.5/5 in iTunes I’ll give it a perfect score.

6. Shake It Off

Best Song of the Album, Period. You should be getting down to this sick beat if you aren’t already. The first single from the album with a crazy music video and with a message to everyone who isn’t ready for the new Taylor Swift music. Haters gonna hate & breakers gonna break but Swift doesn’t give damn. I can’t give it more than 5/5 to this one so, 5/5 it is.

7. I Wish You Would

This is the song that doesn’t start of as well you’d like it to be but, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the wait. It grows on to you while you’re listening to it. Wouldn’t give it perfect score but 4/5 seems good.

8. Bad Blood

The song starts off with an energetic roar & maintains it throughout the whole song. I used to think of the “Bastille” album “Bad Blood” whenever I heard the phrase Bad Blood, but not anymore. From now on it’s this song that will come into my mind. With charming lyrics like “Band-Aids don’t fix bullet holes” Swift just shows how she has mastered the art of writing break-up songs. This one also gets 5/5.

9. Wildest Dreams

If I was making a romantic movie, I would definitely use this song in its soundtrack. It has slow lyric progression with a melodic chorus. I’ll give 5/5 to this one.

10. How You Get the Girl

If you’re familiar with Swift’s previous music style this is something you’ll like. The use of Guitar & Percussions give it a distant Country touch. But the drums & bass-lines keep it away from going full Country. 4/5 (Wanted to give it 4.5 but…)

11. This Love

The real music in this song isn’t the guitar or drumbeats but it is the ambient voice of Taylor Swift. Beauty of her voice flows for 4 minutes & 10 seconds. Atmospheric vocals steal the show from the instruments. 4/5.

12. I Know Places

The first 10 seconds of the song had me like, “Wait, is it a different version of Mine from Speak Now?” But No, the way she curves that into a full-fledged Pop performance is the best thing about it. Is it greedy of me to want a Music Video of this one too? The Lyrics, Vocals, Music production everything is speak for itself. Perfect 5.

13. Clean

This four and a half minute Easy Listening song is the longest song from the album. It might take more than one listens to like it if you’re not into Swift’s slow songs. It is also the last song of the “Regular/Normal Edition.” (So in a way it cleans you before you move onto listen the DLX Exclusive tracks.) 4/5.

14. Wonderland

The first thing I thought of when I heard the word “Wonderland” reminded me of the 2010 Electronic album from Steve Aoki & sub-consciously I expected something upbeat. Coincidently that’s exactly what I got. (Because I know it has nothing to do with Steve Aoki). Piano compositions go perfectly with the Drum-machine sound. 4/5.

15. You Are In Love

A person is likely to like this song. Either because of the calming music & opening or because of the wonderful chorus. I praise this song especially for its production & lyric composition. 4/5.

16. New Romantics

I found this last song a bit cheesy. I also found an 80’s feel to the song & since the album title is a year from the good ol’ 80’s I wouldn’t cut down its marks. Still I’d give it 3/5.

17, 18, 19. Voice Memos

In this album Taylor Swift has included 3 voice memos for the 2nd, 7th & the 12th song. This memos contain how Swift got the idea of the specific song or why she wrote it. I think this memos give the whole album a personal touch from her.

In conclusion, I’d say we might be looking at some of the best work of Taylor Swift here in 1989. We secretly always knew that Taylor Swift is as good of a pop-star as she is a country-singer. From what I see in her Facebook, Twitter & Instagram feed, I think this is just the beginning.

Verdict:  ☆☆☆☆ 4/5

——————————————————————————

I’m so glad to see some of my favorite shows such as Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad, House Of Cards, The Big Bang Theory, The Good Wife, Archer, Modern Family, Fargo, Silicon Valley etc. getting nominated in their major categories.

——————————————————————————

The award ceremony will take place on August 25,2014 at 8PM ET (August 26,2014 – 5:30AM IST) on NBC (in India on Star World).

Lazyness/Timepass/Leisure etc.

To all those who care,

It’s been so long that I have written something on my blog, Approximately 6 months. It’s not that I didn’t have any ideas on what to write. Believe me I had tons of ideas & created some drafts in MS Word also & I think they all were great.

But as the titles gives it away…I’ve been lazy, doing nothing except for watching a lot of TV-Shows, Movies & listening music & studying.

Now that I’ve finally logged into WordPress after a long time I think I owe something to you guys so there’s this.

Semester Finals are less than a month away so I won’t be writing for a month or so but know this, I’ll write as soon as the exams are over, So I think now the blog-posts will be more interesting. Posts like top-10 lists, or discovering new music & so much.

Aabhaar.(Thank You)

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani….

image

If you’re thinking that this is a review of the movie, then you are wrong. Its been almost 3 weeks since its release so, I think everyone has probably seen it.

So, this is just me talking about the movie.

After watching trailers I thought its gonna be amazing, then some friends told it wasn’t that good but at last I watched it & this is what I saw & how could I even miss it!!! It was an Ayan Mukherjee(wake up S!D) film & it had Ranbir & Deepika.

I really liked the way movie started off, the places at the characters were. The development of characters was really fantastic.

The Manali Trekking part was good too, that reminds me of dialogues. Dialogue Writing & Delivery were superb in its own way.

I don’t know if anyone noticed, but some dialogues were intended in two different ways, it was upto viewer’s imagination how to interpret them & that’s what Ayan Mukherjee does so well.

Chemistry between all the characters was so well, Especially I liked Kalki’s performance as a gone bad diva.

The another great thing about this movie is that you really fall in love with characters over time, I know these things do not sound good from me but….

Some people are saying it was not good or was boring & all, but I wanna point out that this movie did some unexpected things and that’s why I liked it.

Music & songs were good but the only song that really stuck to the mood of movie was Ilahi by Mohit Chauhan.

I’m not gonna lie but at some points inthe movie I was just seconds close to cry… (yeah yeah.. I’m emotional…) & I kinda liked that also.

Now you’re thinking If all these things were good what was bad?

~Well, the answer is time. It became very slow after the Badtameez Dil song… Like whole movie was just there & made me feel that Manali trip part was like ages ago…

Too many songs..!!! But what can you do? It’s a cliché for every Bollywood movie.

Movie seemed like realistic but at some points it wasn’t.

I really wanted to see where Avi(Aditya roy Kapoor) & Adi(Kalki)‘s relationship would go…. But instead they introduced joker named Taran (Kunalroy Kapoor).

& what the hell happened to those strict parents of Naina(Deepika). It wasn’t necessary for movie & would have made it even longer still,
NO CONSEQUENCES??Really??

After all it was a good watch because after a very long time (since 3 idiots) a movie came that makes you cry, makes you laugh & makes you learn how to live your dreams.

Philosophy of the movie was amazing. Everyone can relate their selves to the movie. Some dialogues (translated) like,

You Can’t have everything”,
“you must leave something to get something”,
“Make the most of now” etc etc.

really helped the movie.

So… As a verdict I’ll say that it should be watched by everyone who hasn’t & could be fun if you watch again… But it was not an all timer.

Still I don’t support the huge hype it has created, especially among girls about Ranbir.. (& its not that I don’t like Ranbir, I do) but it makes everything overrated.

Well it was a happy ending movie. What more can you ask?
So…..I’m Ending this with a quote.

If you want a happy ending, that depends on where you stop your story.

A Letter from Android to Apple iOS. (As seen on Forbes.com)

image

Dear Apple Fans,

I write to you as the comedic personification of Android, after the debut of iOS 7.

Can I just point out a few things that your OS is doing that contrast with how we do things over here?

You don’t need to worry about all the pastel colours being thrown around making everything old look new.

While the new iOS 7 software is going to be available on older Apple hardware, the chances are that the new OS will debut inside yet another new physical design of the iPhone that may be announced in September. That means a huge expense for anyone upgrading their handset from an iPhone 4 or 5 to presumably the iPhone 6. Actually it means two expenses, as they’ll need to buy a new case as well as a new phone. If you’re spending that sort of money, you should really look at Android… we’ve got lots of cases to suit every budget.

We’ve got a grid based launchers as well, with status bars and tools that slide in from the top and bottom of the screen when you need them.

I think we’ve had them longer and they look different on every handset.

If you don’t like them, change them out with another launcher!

“Consistency is over-rated, do you really want all your apps to run in the same way with the same ‘My First Phone’ user interface?”

Nobody likes a major OS change anyway. Making sure that everyone is on the same version of the Operating System is old hat.

Our developers just write for the lowest common denominator that’s available through the Google Play store, there’s no need to focus on the new features only available on the latest version. You can’t expect everyone to upgrade overnight.

And then there’s this brand new definition of multitasking. It’s not quite multitasking, it’s making sure that only the apps you really use all the time take up the battery power. When Android has background tasks, they can use all the power the third party code demands, even when you can’t see what’s going on.

Let the apps run fast and free!

New software for the users?

~ Android can do everything iRadio can with Pandora & TuneIn.(Even We have music players & other apps that look like iOS).

~We can Geogtag our photos too.

If it’s all about the apps then all the apps come to Android in the end. Instagram and Vine are all doing fine now, there are Android versions available. Let the start-ups and new companies try out their innovative ideas on iOS first, once they are proven winners, that’s when we want to see them on Android, not before.

Yours (with a hint of irony),

Android.

The Goodwin Games…

I have always been a extremely huge Fan of the sitcom ” how i met your mother ” and always will be.

So, when I first heard that its creators Carter Bays & Craig Thomas are making a new TV show I had to do something about it.

Well I managed to watch the pilot episode somehow & here it is.

The new series is named “The Goodwin Games” which is also a sitcom (without live audience).

image

It Premiered on FOX on 20th May.

It Stars Becki Newton, T.J.Miller & Scott Foley.

image

We know Becki Newton as Stripper Quinn from himym & T.J.Miller is also known for his work in How to train your dragon. So the cast seems strong.

Let’s talk about its plot.

—————————–

72 year old retired Math professor with 23 million dollars inheritance leaves clues in his will for his children which unveil after his death.

The Characters will have to play a game or solve a mystery in order to get close the property. That Game is called “The Goodwin Games“.

1.) Henry Goodwin (elder brother – Scott Foley) is a Surgeon & recently engaged.

2.) Chloe Goodwin (sister – Becki Newton)  is a wannabe actress.

3.) Jimmy Goodwin (youngest brother – T.J. Miller) is a minor criminal(thief) on a parole which seems to be the break out character because he is portrayed totally dumb.

There is a 4th character named elijah but no one knows who the heck he is or where he’s from. (Just like FEZ from That 70’s Show).

These siblings were sick of their father’s behaviour so they quit on him at young age & now the father is trying to tie all loose ends after his death by the clues & puzzles. All clues are Video Taped.

It seemed pretty weird when I first heard about it but after watching the Pilot episode I think its gonna be quite a wild ride for viewers.

To all how i met your mother fans this show could be fun. It has suspenses, Flash back tours, Family Values etc. Well background scores, Good way of story telling are really good too.

Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris (Co-writer of himym) have tried to create “SOMETHING NEW” (if u know what I mean).

I recommend it.

It might not be as amazing as himym but please don’t compare, just give it a try.

It needs more appreciation than it has & only one episode is broadcasted (As on 23rd May), watch it for himym’s sake.

A Huge Fan of How I Met Your Mother
